Digital Artifact Project

On the last day of class, we will be doing a gallery walk through. This will mean that you will have a complete digital artifact on your computer, and students and other guests will come through and see what you have created.

Next to your computer or artifact, I want you to complete an "Artifact Statement" which will tell the viewer walking by your computer can get the main idea of your work.

For example, if you have created a podcast and it is there to listen, but people will not get through the entire podcast, you want to let people know what it is about and why you created it.

If you have some specific instructions, like scroll through the power point, or maybe have multiple steps to see the artifact, make sure they are there.

Print out your "Artifact Statement" and place it next to or on your computer.

Direction: Please touch the arrow keys to advance the story from one moment to the next.

Statement: I have always been interested in storytelling and when I decided to engage in a multimedia presentation, I wanted to use the zoom in and out elements of that Prezi offered. This platform has more visual appeal than something like Powerpoint. As I started creating this story, it began to really take shape. And while I really am proud of the visual and text-based story elements, I tried for the first time to make an ambient sound based connection to my story.

Some of the stories are just static written stories. In "The Departure" rather than a static story with words, it is a dialogue that appears back and forth as they are speaking. The text reveals in a back and forth which changes the intensity of the words and exchange. Then it moves into the audio which sounds like someone splashing and swimming and then it slowly fades into someone sinking below the water and the heartbeat as if they are drowning or leaving. I used the map as a visual, and while I like that element, it could be better crafted and made into something more artistic.

Overall, I am happy with the design and the delivery of the story. I learned what works and doesn't work, and I feel like while it still has to be linear - from beginning to end, it can still be multimedia and add a variety of experience based on preferences -- visual, audio, textual and experiential.

Digital Storytelling
Digital storytelling is a relatively new term which describes the new practice of everyday people who use digital tools to tell their story. Digital stories often present in compelling and emotionally engaging formats and can be interactive.

Digital Storytelling Website

This is an important skill because it is a common vision in education, commercial, industry - and that we are story based creatures. Learning through a story is significantly more compelling than learning a random fact.

If you are considering this particular idea for your digital project look through the website link. There are a lot of different ways to approach digital storytelling. It doesn't have to be complicated, in fact, some of the best stories were told based on one image.
